Good pot topper alternative
These are a brilliant alternative to the usual (and much more environmentally impactful) quarried stone you see in garden centres. It's an interesting material – almost sandstone in texture, and you can really feel the moisture holding properties the company claims. The stones do have a "damp" feeling, which is just brilliant in the heat that we're going through as I write this.Normal stone would have a protective effect of course, but this seems to block heat much more effectively and absorb it more, protecting your soil and keeping the water from being baked off. Its use as a mixer would be good for this reason as well.It is a grey colour, each piece is rounded and I think it looks really nice – like you've just found the stones in nature. It is slightly messier to use than standard decorative stone, as it crumbles and at the bottom of the packet there were a few crumbs, but I wouldn't see this as a negative really. You can easily sort through and end up with a great result.I think for the amount you get (enough to top two 25cm pots) it is an expensive product and it is suited more for indoor plants for this reason, as you'll be spending hundreds topping borders with it. I knock off a star in part due to the price but also because they do discolour to a brown after a few waters, due to the water taking on some of the soil colour and absorbing into the stones and evaporating, which can look a bit shabby. I do very much like the product and it is much, much better for the environment than mass produced stone. It'll be interesting to see how it holds up, especially in a damp winter where usual white quarried stone goes green.
