LAVA-LITE HYDRO-GRO+ is a premium volcanic hydroponic growing media and natural LECA alternative, giving you complete control over your hydroponic or aquaponics substrate setup.
Its ultra-porous structure encourages strong root distribution, supports beneficial microbe colonisation and provides the ideal balance of drainability, moisture retention and gas exchange in the root zone. Because it is 100% natural, pH-neutral and chemically inert, HYDRO-GRO+ allows growers full control over nutrient feeds, fertilisers and additives without interference from the substrate.
It significantly reduces the risk of soil-borne diseases and supports healthier, more vigorous plant growth from seedling through to harvest.
⭐ Perfect For
- Hydroponic systems (DWC, NFT, drip, ebb & flow)
- Aquaponics setups (safe for fish)
- Semi-hydro houseplants (aroids, hoyas, alocasias)
- Cutting propagation & rooting stems
- Soil-free vegetable growing (lettuce, herbs, peppers)
- Grow troughs, raised beds & planters
- Replacing LECA with a more porous, microbe-friendly media
- Growers wanting full control over nutrients & feeding regimes
⭐ Key Benefits
- 100% natural volcanic media — pH-neutral & chemically inert
- Porous structure supports beneficial bacteria & microbe colonisation
- Soft edges protect delicate roots and encourage new growth
- Ideal balance of drainage, moisture retention & gas exchange
- Reduces soil-borne diseases — perfect for soil-free growing
- Reusable & eco-friendly — supports high crop cycles
- Complete nutrient control — inert media won't affect feeding regimes
- Suitable for seeds, seedlings & cuttings
⭐ How To Use
If using seeds, fill your hydroponic container completely with HYDRO-GRO+. If using seedlings or cuttings, fill the container up to the depth of the root system. Gently pat down the media to create an even surface and ensure full contact with the container edges. Push seeds into the media to a depth of around 3 inches, or hold seedlings/cuttings in place and fill the rest of the container. Rinse before use to remove fines and prevent filter clogging. Add nutrient solution or water to your hydroponic reservoir and maintain as normal.
⭐ FAQs
What is LAVA-LITE HYDRO-GRO+? It is a natural volcanic hydroponic media designed to provide excellent aeration, drainage and moisture control for hydroponics, aquaponics and semi-hydro houseplants.
Is HYDRO-GRO+ safe for fish and aquatic systems? Yes — it is chemically inert, pH-neutral and completely non-toxic. It is safe for aquaponics, fish, plants and beneficial bacteria.
Can HYDRO-GRO+ replace LECA? Absolutely — HYDRO-GRO+ offers superior porosity, faster bacterial colonisation and better moisture balance compared to traditional clay pebbles.
Does HYDRO-GRO+ help prevent root rot? Yes — its free-draining structure and controlled moisture retention help prevent waterlogging and support oxygen-rich root zones.
Can I use HYDRO-GRO+ for houseplants? Definitely — it is ideal for semi-hydro setups, aroids, hoyas, alocasias and plants that prefer consistent moisture without sitting in water.
Is HYDRO-GRO+ suitable for propagation? Yes — its moisture-balanced structure supports rooting cuttings and growing new plants.
Does HYDRO-GRO+ affect nutrient levels? No — it is completely inert and will not alter feeding regimes, making nutrient control easy and predictable.
Do I need to rinse HYDRO-GRO+ before use? Yes — rinse thoroughly to remove natural volcanic dust and prevent filter clogging.
Does HYDRO-GRO+ degrade over time? No — it is long-lasting, reusable and maintains its structure across multiple growing cycles.

I use this as an alternative type of semi-hydro growing substrate than Leda clay balls, some plants seem to prefer this as it apparently retains moisture for longerI’m not an expert so can’t really comment on the above, but I do use these along with the clay balls, both together and seperately, I also use them to help cuttings adapt from being in ‘water” and root boost/feeding solution, to going happier into either or a mix of above substrates. This is good stuff.O you can also use this to add to specific “soil” mixtures…
Firstly, this is not liquid. It is a bag of pebble like light rocks that need to be submerged in water and then plant your plant.I planted mixed salad and waiting now for results - if they indeed will grow in this medium.Very light and easy to use.Good size rocks - my glass bowl was large enough to fit almost all of the 3L bag size.It supposedly helps some plants to grow which I'm not surprised as I know some herbs or veg are grown this way.Pebbles/rocks seem good quality, very porous. At this moment I'm not sure if this is worth £14.95 but if my salad takes off, I will update. For now, I like it and I like experimenting with it.I would welcome bit more information on growing though.
I am new to this kind of growing so I am still learning but I got this to go in my iDOO Hydroponics Growing System, It seems good stuff and I am seeing the sprouts so hopefully it will work really well.
