LAVA-LITE CACTUS-GRO+ is a premium natural volcanic cactus soil and succulent growing media, engineered for fast drainage and root health — the ideal bonsai substrate and terrarium drainage layer for indoor and outdoor plants.
This lightweight, decorative media can be used as part of a cactus potting mix, as a standalone substrate for propagation, or as an attractive top dressing that prevents soil erosion during watering. It is 100% natural, pH-neutral, eco-friendly and pet-safe volcanic soil, safe for pets and children.
CACTUS-GRO+ is also suitable for terrariums, bonsai, microclimate stabilisation and soilless growing, thanks to its thermal and moisture-retention properties.
⭐ Perfect For
- Cacti & succulents needing fast drainage
- Bonsai trees requiring controlled moisture
- Propagating cuttings in a stable, moisture-balanced media
- Decorative top dressing for indoor & outdoor pots
- Terrariums needing drainage layers & moisture control
- Soilless growing setups (5cm base layer recommended)
- Preventing soil erosion during watering
⭐ Key Benefits
- Enhances drainage — prevents water pooling & root rot
- Absorbs moisture — holds up to 25% moisture for controlled watering
- Promotes healthy roots — allows air flow for strong root structures
- Slowly releases water as the plant needs it
- Great for propagation — moisture retention supports cuttings
- Stops water pooling — prevents drowning in pots
- 100% natural & pH-neutral — safe for pets, children & wildlife
- Decorative finish — improves the look of plant displays
⭐ How To Use
Step 1: Place a 2–2.5cm (¾ inch) layer of CACTUS-GRO+ evenly on top of the soil around your plant. Step 2: Gently pat down to create an even surface, pushing it fully to the pot edges. Step 3: Repeat for each plant. Add more product as needed for continued protection.
Optional — Soilless Growing: Place 5cm of CACTUS-GRO+ in the bottom of the container, add the plant with its root ball (no compost), and fill around with the media. Terrariums: Use as a drainage layer to maintain moisture balance in enclosed ecosystems.
⭐ How Much Do I Need?
- 1L pouch — top-dresses approximately 4–6 small pots (up to 12cm / 5 inch), or provides a drainage base for 1–2 medium terrariums.
- 3L pouch — top-dresses approximately 12–18 small pots, ideal for larger collections, repotting several succulents, or a soilless base layer in bigger containers.
As a guide, allow roughly 0.2L per 12cm pot for a 2–2.5cm top layer, and around 1L per litre of container volume for a full soilless setup.
⭐ Watering Guidance
Because CACTUS-GRO+ holds up to 25% moisture and releases it slowly, plants typically need watering around one-third less often than in standard compost. Always let the media dry out between waterings and water only when the top layer feels dry to the touch — this prevents overwatering and root rot.

Item arrived well packaged and in good conditionGreat for when having to re-pot my succulents. They seem to be doing really well since I have moved over to this. The 1kg bag is great if you only have a few to do but it comes in larger bag sizes if you need.I still have quite a bit left over from the smaller bag so a good excuse to buy some more
Great Price - its great for cactus and my spikey boy is happy and looking healthy but you really do get much in a packet.
I've mixed this into my soil for my succulents and they seem to be healthy and doing great with it. It helps with drainage and seems just a good as any I've used before. It's not a big bag but you don't need loads of it so it's ideal for even a few big pots.
Lava-Lite's Cactus Gro+ can be used for cactus, succulents and bonsai. It's an easy to use dedicated growing medium that helps to improve drainage and water retention for such plants when mixed into compost. Child and pet friendly, it's pH neutral, natural and eco-friendly and versatile, it can even be used as a neat top dressing for pots. My partner is keen on growing cacti and succulents. He'd not tried this before but is impressed and tells me he'd get it again. It may seem pricey for a 1kg resealable pouch pack but if using it mixed in with compost, a little goes a long way. And improved drainage should result in stronger, healthier roots and thriving plants.
This is a good product for cacti. It's a bag of lava stones that you place on top if the soil all around the cacti, to add nutrients and support moisture. The bag is good value for small cacti or succulents, less so if you have large pots. Perfect for plant health and growth.

Yes, yes I know it seems expensive, but it's a 5* product.A little goes along way. I mix 30% of it with 70% compost & it works a treat.I repotted two of my bonsai using this mixture, & within a couple of days recovery, there was clear signs of improvement.I have only repotted one cacti at the moment, so that is hard to equate. It comes in a resealable pouch & is child/pet friendly. Also the price drops, the bigger the bag that you buy.
Perfect for mixing into the compost. We’ve managed to repot over half our cacti and succulents and still have plenty left. We’ve also covered the top of the compost with them to make it look nice and clean. Great for drainage too. A small bag goes a long way.
Although this is quite a small bag it does go a long way especially when mixed with compost, I used it to repot my cacti and some succulents that were looking a little sorry for themselves and the succulents have already started to look healthier.
This is a good if some what expensive potting medium. However I do agree that cacti and succulents do require a fairly specific growing medium and this product does look to be effective when moving plants on to their new pots. This product does help with drainage. I, like some others are mixing this medium with a similar amount of standard indoor plant compost. So far the results have been pleasing with renewed plant growth but I feel the product is currently a little over priced.
Recently re-potted my succulents with this and they seem to be doing okay so far. The soil is perfect for them as it has very good drainage which these plants need whilst still being able to retain the right amount of moisture for them.It is not the largest bag but enough for my use, overall quite happy with it!
